The characters are irresponsible dreamers – The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a viable novel in typifying the tireless battle of numerous to accomplish the American dream. The monetary blast and the extreme change in the public eye following the First World War may have contributed generally to the possibility of the American dream. Fitzgerald depicted in The Great Gatsby the unmistakable difference between the rich and the poor while uncovering a typical comparability †an expectation in accomplishing the American dream. The tale follows the fantasies of individuals from altogether separate social classes and embodies the foiled dreams of both the prosperous and the oppressed, through unethical and untrustworthy activities. Generally speaking, it very well may be said that The Great Gatsby sums up the manner by which society's meaning of the American dream transformed from that of accomplishing joy to gaining money related impacts. Daisy Buchanan can be viewed as one of the preeminent ‘irresponsible visionaries' in the novel. Her character seems to mirror that of a child's. She regularly acts flighty, youthful and is continually looking for consideration. A case of this is on page 15 where Nick specifies â€Å"I've heard it said that Daisy's mumble was uniquely to make individuals lean toward her. † Her silly ascribes may have added to her flighty nature. In the wake of meeting Gatsby, Daisy starts to see everything in a sentimental light. She murmurs to Gatsby about needing to â€Å"just get one of those pink mists and put you in it and push you around† (page 101). Her relationship with Gatsby appears to have a tinge of imagination, as though she is more keen on escaping from reality than being involved with him. Daisy's undertaking with Gatsby can be said to be untrustworthy as she is both a spouse and a mother. Additionally, her choice to have an unsanctioned romance may perhaps have originated from the indignation and envy she felt in thinking about Tom's betrayal. The passing of Myrtle and the occasions that followed indicated perusers exactly how flighty Daisy's character is. Regardless of that eventually, Daisy was answerable for the passing of Myrtle, she seemed unremorseful in leaving fault to Gatsby. This is apparent when Fitzgerald composes â€Å"But she and Tom had left, early that evening, and taken stuff with them† (pg 171). This line promptly shows perusers that Daisy may have felt little blame at abandoning Gatsby to manage the repercussions of Myrtle's demise. The â€Å"baggage† that the pair had taken with them infers that they are leaving for a delayed measure of time and furthermore that Tom and Daisy may have invested energy arranging their leave. Daisy's refusal of tolerating her part in Myrtle's demise shows components of good rot of the '20's general public. For a bigger scope, it very well may be proposed that Daisy and Tom encapsulate the rich old privileged, a general public that could adequately maintain a strategic distance from obligation regarding their activities through their shield of plenteous riches and high status. Daisy, specifically mirrors the quintessential case of the American dream-she had acquired her riches, is hitched to a similarly well off man and pivots in the circles of the high society. Then again, perusers can contend that toward the finish of the novel, Daisy settled on the mindful choice of remaining with Tom, sparing her marriage and her little girl and can hence be pardoned for her past activities. Myrtle's character speaks to the normal common laborers resident of America. In any case, her issue with Tom allows her a couple of the extravagances that other common regular workers residents would not have the option to achieve. For instance, she says â€Å"I'd prefer to get one of those police dogs† (page 33). This concentrate shows that with the upside of Tom's riches, Myrtle can stand to be whimsical. Her flippancy lies with her conviction of an ascent in social remaining through her relationship with Tom. Her demeanor to others of her own class, changes, maybe connoting a defilement of honesty. At the point when Tom and Myrtle have a get-together in their loft, Myrtle acts in a disparaging way towards Mrs McKee, dismissing her commendations and offering Mrs McKee her garments (page 37 and 42). Fitzgerald may have composed it to show that the American dream was not really ethically legitimized, for when Myrtle accomplished parts of the American dream †riches †she carried on haughtily. Notwithstanding, perusers may contend that Myrtle was not flippant, as she was just seeking after the opportunity for a superior life. Myrtle may have considered her to be relationship with Tom as a methods for getting this â€Å"better life† thus her activities were reasonable. Her passing speaks to the moderate crumbling of the American dream. Its unexpectedness might represent the sudden financial blast (and later the unexpected monetary bust), and the finish of the American dream for both Myrtle and the average workers society. In Gatsby, it is clear Fitzgerald has typified the genuine American dream. Gatsby's move from humble beginnings to claiming a gigantic manor, an effective business and a Rolls Royce presentations to perusers the perfect type of the American dream. In any case, it is likewise clear that Gatsby demonstrations in flippant manners. His central point seemed, by all accounts, to be to win back Daisy. Gatsby says on page 117 â€Å"Can't rehash the past? (†¦ ) obviously you can! † This conviction indicated perusers that Gatsby was maybe trying to claim ignorance that Daisy had proceeded onward from him, and had a different life from him. He had drudged for a long time to have the option to present to Daisy a commendable accomplice in himself, ostensibly an untrustworthy go about as it was inescapable that following five years, Daisy would have proceeded onward. Fitzgerald likewise connects the topic of time to Gatsby. Fitzgerald composes â€Å"the clock took this second to tilt hazardously at the weight of his head† (page 93). This line could speak to Gatsby's solid conviction in rehashing the past, while the clock tilting perilously could maybe be a hazardous sign of the disaster to come. Another type of Gatsby's recklessness is in his solid unwaveringness to Daisy, in spite of the way that she is hitched to another man. Amusingly, his devotion to her end up being his demolition as he assumes the fault for Myrtle's demise and in this way was killed by Wilson. Like Myrtle, Gatsby ends up being a survivor of the American dream, and like Myrtle, his demise could maybe speak to the crumbling of the American dream. Furthermore, Fitzgerald's point by point depiction of the arrangement of Gatsby's gatherings toward the start of Chapter 3 could maybe have been to represent Gatsby's indulgence in attempting to prevail upon Gatsby. This could maybe be viewed as inefficient and reckless of Gatsby by perusers. Nonetheless, it very well may be contended that Gatsby was impacted by his affection for Daisy and in this manner his excess was advocated. It is proposed in the novel that Gatsby made his riches through taking part in crimes. Be that as it may, as it isn't straightforwardly referenced, it can't altogether be viewed as another of his reckless activities. All in all, it tends to be said that Gatsby's flippancy originated from his quest for Daisy's affection, thus perusers are regularly more compassionate towards him than some other character in the novel. Besides, Gatsby's portrayal of the American dream gave off an impression of being the one in particular that didn't bring together on fiscal addition †another perspective that draws compassion from perusers on his passing. To a degree, it tends to be concurred that the characters are flippant visionaries. Perusers be that as it may, might be at a difference over which character holds the greatest obligations. Daisy can be viewed as one of the most untrustworthy characters as she assumed an extraordinary job in the demise of Myrtle and in this manner her activity had a more noteworthy result. The American dream additionally has an impact in the flightiness of characters as it is regularly their quest for their fantasies that drives them to settle on unethical and unreliable choices. Fitzgerald's delineation of the â€Å"roaring twenties† and the uncommon conveyance of riches uncovered a disturbing result of social and good rot.

Apocalypse Now By Francis Ford Coppola - 1073 Words

In Francis Ford Coppola’s, Apocalypse Now (1979), you follow the journey of Captain Benjamin L. Willard, as he makes his way up the Nung River on a US Navy patrol boat in Vietnam to assassinate Colonel Walter Kurtz. Coppola’s film reflects the Vietnam war and all the horrors –seen and unseen— associated with it. Specifically, the dissent into madness and the dehumanizing effects of war. Coppola uses the river to symbolize this dissent into madness. The further up the river the crew got, the more dehumanized they became. Even Coppola’s choice of title Apocalypse Now screams what this movie is about. This symbolism accompanied by perfectly paired music and camera angles that often cast shadows strongly show the madness of war. Coppola expresses the decline into insanity in stages. In this first stage, there is still have plenty of light and very few shadows. This stage represents the dehumanization of the enemy and it is where we first meet Lt. Colone l Bill Kilgore. Coppola perfectly pairs the song â€Å"Ride of The Valkyries† with a scene of Kilgore flying in with helicopters and tearing up a village. As the song plays, we can see an uneven match between the Americans and the natives. Just like a Valkyrie, Kilgore is seen as a decider of who lives and who dies. This is further enforced by the fact that Kilgore is a part of the Air Calvary. A division of the Army that was once known to ride around on horses, implying that Lt. I Am Gandhi As My Leader - 1911 Words

I picked Gandhi as my leader because in my opinion he was one of the most humble leaders in the 20th century. He held no official political title, commanded no army and had no great wealth but he managed to influence an entire country to stand up for independence in non-violent forms. I have also studied about some of his movements as a result of myself being from Sri Lanka which is a neighboring country to India. Gandhi also made people believe in themselves and feel influential in the shared vision. Therefore I thought I would do my leadership biography and learn more about him and also to instill some of the characteristics and approaches I learn to my life in the future. He was one of the only people who fought violence with non-violence to bring freedom to a country. Being from Sri Lanka, I have heard a great deal about his leadership and his movements to fight against different unfair taxations put forth by the British on the Indian people because at that time India was a British colony. He fought silently and kept moving towards his ultimate end goal irrespective of what got in his way and he fought it all with non-violence. Sri Lanka too was invaded on multiple occasions, by the Portuguese, Dutch and British respectively. It is well known that most of the retaliations were bloody and was filled with violence. The Counter Reformation and Catholic Mass - 1094 Words

Rising nationalism, the Western Schism, and even new philosophies arising from the renaissance were contributing factors. But on October 31, 1517 every event prior seemed less significant. On this date, Martin Luther nailed a paper listing ninety-five theses, all magnifying problems within the Catholic Church. This was the birth of the protestant reformation, a major blow to the Catholic Church and her followers. This drove the church to make many in-house adjustments, from religious orders to political influences of the church, reworking the framework of the traditional Mass itself and even restructuring many in house positions. This list of corrections made and actions taken in response to the Protestant Reformation is commonly referred†¦show more content†¦Alexander Farnese was positioned as Governor-General of the Spanish Netherlands. Farnese led a successful campaign against the Dutch Revolt, in capturing the main cities in the south and returned them to the control of Catholic Spain. By the treaty of Arras in 1579, he secured the support of southern Catholic nobles. Although this treaty did not last forever, and the northern seven provinces eventually became free and independent, forming the Dutch Republic, this was a victory for the Catholic Church, seeing as the treaty lasted until the end of the reformation period. To keep a solid foothold in both political and religious worlds, the Church believed institutional reform was necessary. In 1545, Pope Paul III initiated the Council of Trent, which lasted until 1564. In this council, a group of cardinals was assigned the duty of addressing many controversial issues such as indulgences, corrupt priests and bishops, and other financial abuses. The council based itself off of the Medieval Church. All the way down to its doctrine, sacramental systems, and religious orders. While this group reaffirmed the traditional fundamentals, noticeable differences were visible. One correction that made a visible difference was fixing the growing divide between clerics and the laity. Clerics were commonly rural priests that did not know Latin and did not have proper theological training. Since the year of 2008, the company has achieved remarkable growth and progress (Tadweer 2016). The company has achieved a major leap in the field of safe waste management. The company has significant contribution in the developing mechanism in developing mechanism for industrial waste and protection. The vision of the company is to become one of the most sustainable companies in Abu Dhabi within 2030 (Tadweer 2016). Concept of human resource management Yuan and Xu (2013) stated that human resource management is the formal system used for the management of people within a company. It has been found that human resource managers have mainly three types of responsibilities. They are such as employee compensation, staffing and employee welfare and designing and defining jobs (Taylor 2014). It has been found that success of a business is highly dependent on human resource management of an organization. It helps an organization to react quickly to opportunities and help to gain access to accurate information. For this human resource planning has become an important part of organizational activity. It helps a company to assess the future supply and demands of human resources. Klotz et al. (2013) stated that HR planning helps to develop a mechanism to eliminate that gap exist between the current demand and supply of human resources. In addition, it helps to adjust the business policy in accordance to the labor market condition. All the fact ors have discussed below for the company The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi. Job evaluation It has been found that grading method is used as the effective job evolution method for the company. Shackleton (2015) stated that this method is popular among the U.S. Civil Service Commission. The company has an authorized committee to develop classes or job grades. According to Avery et al. (2013), job grade can be defined as a group of different jobs of same difficulty and those required similar skills in order to conduct them in appropriate manner. The committee uses denominators like responsibilities, knowledge and skills to develop different grades of job. These job grades are such as skilled and unskilled labor, waste management engineer, laboratory assistant and accounts (Tadweer 2016). After evolution of the job grades, different wage and salary rate is fixed for every grade. After analyzing the grading method used by the company The Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, some advantages and disadvantages of this job evolution technique has been found. This method is economical, simple in operation and easy to understand. It also helps to solve the pay determination problem for administer (Latham 2012). However, this method used by the company has also some issues. For instance, it suffers from personal biasness. It cannot deal with complex jobs that do not fit neatly to one grade (Avery et al. 2013). Employee selection and recruitment within the company It has been found that, the company uses a five stage model of recruitment. It includes stages like recruitment planning, strategy development, searching, screening and evaluation and control (Mattfeld 2013). This stage includes developing draft of the inclusive job specification for the unoccupied position (Boswell et al. 2012). It highlights all minor and major skills, experience, skills, qualifications and the level of payment. In this stage, the company tries to attract job seekers towards it. The company uses both internal and external sources to attract job seekers (Tadweer 2016). Latham (2012) argued that screening is the starting stage of selection. However, in the Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, screening is considered as the integral part of the selection process. The actual selection process of the company starts after all the applications have been shortlisted and screened. They are screened against the knowledge, abilities, skills and experience required for a job. In this stage, the management has to evaluate and control the cost of recruitment. The cost of recruitment includes salary for the recruiters, cost of the time spent for job analysis and other administrative expenses. Employee motivation and rewarding system The company uses different strategies to improve employee motivation and rewarding system. They are mentioned below: All employees are involved in the organizational decisions and development system adopted by the organization. The company sets reasonable and transparent standard of performance for rewards in order to make sure that employees understand how to earn rewards. The origination uses objective performance data to determine the reward (Skudiene and Auruskeviciene 2012). The company management emphasizes on teamwork and cooperation and recognizes both small and large accomplishments of employees. The management team provides rewards immediately after any worker is able to achieve the desired behaviour (Tadweer 2016). Employees are given the opportunity to select their own rewards. For example, they can select either monetary rewards (increase in payment) or non-monetary rewards (holidays, promotions). When an employee has to do unfamiliar tasks, the company provides rewards depending on continuous reinforcement schedule (Tadweer 2016). Conclusion After analyzing the HRM strategies, it has been found that the company has adopted best practices of the industry. It has been found that grading method is used as the effective job evolution method for the company. The committee uses denominators like responsibilities, knowledge and skills to develop different grades of job. In case of employee selection, the company uses a five stage model of recruitment. It includes stages like recruitment planning, strategy development, searching, screening and evaluation and control. The company sets reasonable and transparent standard of performance for rewards in order to make sure that employees understand how to earn rewards. The company management emphasizes on teamwork and cooperation and recognizes both small and large accomplishments of employees. However, there some issues related with the HRM strategies can be found. For this reason, some recommendations have been provided. They are mentioned below: The company can use ranking method for job evaluation. It simpler and economic compare to the existing grading method used by the company. It is less time consuming and it requires little paper work. In case of employee motivation and rewarding, the company has to prohibit any kind of discrimination. The company management should not select employees depending on their culture, religion, gender in case of rewards and recognition. Instead, they should select employees depending on their performance and organizational behaviour. They have to motivate employees for ethical behaviour. The management of the company has to change the rewarding system more frequently. It will surprise employees and make the process more exciting. It will motivate employees to work hard, so that they can achieve both organizational and individual objectives. Reference list Avery, D.R., McKay, P.F. and Volpone, S.D., 2013. Some of My Fondest Memories free essay sample

One of the first  best childhood memories  I really remember is the garden my father had in our backyard, vegies behind the garage to the left and a fruit garden to the right in front of the back fence. Down the right side bordering the fence were several trees, one of them being a plum tree. Right at the back of the property my father had build a three sided hut in which we could sit and have afternoon tea and where we could play all sorts of games in shelter from sun or rain. My brother and sister, or perhaps it was my Dad, helped me (or maybe I helped them) build a tree house in the first tree in that stand on the right side and we used to climb up there and hide away from the world. We were rich in that we had fresh vegetables in a huge garden behind the garage, we had black and red currants, raspberries and gooseberries growing on the right side of our backyard and Dad had arranged with someone who owned a bare section down the road from our house to be able to use it for growing sweet-corn, which he sold at the gate as well as us being able to eat all we wanted of that fresh sweet corn! And in the front of our house Dad had planted two sweet apricot trees which were our delight in summer! The neighbor grew a grapevine and kiwi-fruit vine on the boundary fence, of which we could help ourselves to any fruit that happened to grow on our side and there many that could be persuaded Oh my, all this talk of food is making me hungry all that good fresh food our parents worked to provide for us what a blessing!

GeographyHomeworkMissLombard 2 Essay

GeographyHomeworkMissLombard 2 Essay GeographyHomeworkMissLombard 2 Essay Andrea Jaendrasingh Practice Questions June 2013: a. Comment on how the three strategies shown could contribute to urban re imaging. (10 Marks) Strategy 1 would contribute to re imaging an urban area as it aims to attract many different visitor groups. The components of a place influence the perception people have of that place. An example of this is Stratford. Before the 2012 Olympics was hosted there, it was mainly an industrial state and therefore was not a popular place to visit. It was run down and the ponds and rivers were polluted. Once it began to be developed for the Olympics to be hosted there, more interesting architecture, public parks and natural landscapes were created. This gave Stratford a new image. Through the creation of new attractions, wider groups of people would be attracted to a place to visit. This could include bird watchers, naturists, photographers and new business investors. Although this strategy would contribute to re imaging a place such as Stratford, it could result in potential conflict for land use. Strategy 2 (Events and services)could contribute to urban re imaging due to the fact that if a place is a social hub for festivals and other events as well as shopping and tours, it is re imaged to be vibrant and entertaining with lots of activities. This could re image a place to then be considered affordable, beautiful and family oriented Strategy 3 would help to re image an area due to the fact that the image that people see and the reputation that they hear is better. This strategy aims to improve the looks rather than the actual experience. It can be seen to be the most expensive strategy out of all three and it would require the aesthetics of an urban area to be changed which is quite costly. b. Using examples, explain the roles of different players involved in helping to rebrand rural areas. (10 Marks) An example of a previously rural area that has now been rebranded is Cornwall. This has mainly been done through the Eden project as it helped re image Cornwall. Key players involved in helping to rebrands rural areas such as Cornwall do so mainly to increase the total revenue made so it can be used for improving different facilities. One key player involved in this rebranding may have been Environmental groups. Whilst wanting to rebrand, they would intend to do sustainably. While this is obviously beneficial for the environment, it is also beneficial in aiding places such as Cornwall or Stratford to re image as an environmentally friendly place. Another player involved in aiding to rebrand would be the Local and Regional Government. For example, in Cornwall for the Eden project, the local government had control over transport and also had influence on planning decisions. Finally, another player involved in rural rebranding would be business interests. They would be involved in the rebranding of areas such as Stratford for the Olympics due to the fact that they are aware of the benefits that rebranding these places will bring in the future even after these events have occurred. This could include in most cases small business investors or in other cases larger scale investors. Normally, when rebrandi ng a rural areas, there are larger scale business investors wanting to invest in the surrounding environment of the place that is being rebranded. This is due to the fact that they will help the economy of these rural areas more than small businesses would. These players were involved in helping to rebrand rural areas such as Cornwall due to them weighing out the advantages and disadvantages and deciding if it is beneficial for a specific rural place. January 2013: a. Comment on the usefulness of the three fieldwork approaches to investigate rural rebranding. (10 Marks) Questionnaires are a useful fieldwork approach when investigating rural rebranding as they allow certain individuals to collect both quantitative and

Investor Sentiment Explanation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Investor Sentiment Explanation - Essay Example Closed-end funds can serve as a perfect illustration for limitations of many theoretical assumptions. Concerns of many researchers from US and UK trying to explain closed-end funds, which differ from open-end funds with a fixed limited number of shares on the stock market, deserve serious attention. But before an explanation of closed-end fund phenomena from the behavioral perspective will be given, clear frames of the subject question should be defined. There are some differences and similarities between closed-end funds in the US and the UK. One of the most important differences is much greater participation of institutional investors in the UK market than in the US (Bleaney and Smith 2003, p. 19). Nevertheless the US and the UK markets are more similar than different, that is why we can extend results acquired from one market to another, but with some corrections made. Investor Sentiment Explanation Unlike economic theories trying to explain the closed-end fund puzzle with rational assumptions (e.g. tax liabilities), behavioral theories imply that there is some amount of irrationality on the market. It is called â€Å"noise trader sentiment† — the component of expectations about asset returns not warranted by fundamentals. Basic assumptions of investor sentiment explanations are as follows:some of the investors are not fully rational, and their demand for risky assets is affected by their beliefs or sentiments; arbitrage is risky and therefore limited. However, researchers advise not to fall into opposite extreme: â€Å"It is absolutely not true that introducing a degree of irrationality of some investors into models of financial markets eliminates all discipline and can explain everything†.

How to Protect Yourself from Chikan :: Essays Papers

How to Protect Yourself from Chikan All trains and subways in Tokyo and other cities around Tokyo are terribly crowded during rush hour. In addition to the crowds on trains, young female passengers have to go through one more trial on a train. They must protect themselves from Chikans, men who touch women on the train. Women who are working or studying in Tokyo have to keep three things in mind when they are on a train: how to avoid meeting Chikans, how to protect themselves, and how to protect their friends. First, young women should try not to choose lines or trains which have a high possibility of meeting Chikans. Needless to say, Chikans seldom appear on trains which are not crowded. Accordingly, the best way to avoid Chikans is to avoid taking crowded trains. However, women have to take crowded trains during rush hour to arrive at their offices or schools on time. Though they cannot choose the time of the trains, they can choose which line they should take. In general, women meet Chikans more frequently when they take private lines, the subways, or JR lines. They especially have to be aware of some lines which have a bad reputation among young women. For example, the Odakyu line is one of the most crowded trains. We have all kinds of schools, including high-level, low-level, and public schools along the Odakyu line, and many women, especially female students, tend to meet Chikans on this line. I met ones who were male students of a certain school when I was a high school student. In contrast, many schools along the subways in the center part of Tokyo are high-level or expensive private schools, and women do not meet Chikans very much on these lines. The Inogashira line is also famous among women for Chikans. Many young people use this line to go to Shibuya, which is the most popular place in Tokyo. Some of my friends told me that some men use this line only to touch women. Because of these reasons, I often use other lines to go to Tokyo. Next, many young women tend to put up with Chikans silently when they are on a train alone. However, they should protect themselves from Chikans by following three steps. First, if you think that someone is touching you, turn your head slowly and look at his hand to make sure that he is really a Chikan.

Explore the ways in which Shakespeare presents male characters Essay

The female characters in ‘Hamlet’ have several vital roles within the play that serve to add depth and interest to the overall plot. Shakespeare employs the women to emphasize key themes such as betrayal, that might not otherwise be drawn out, and also enable the audience to gain a deeper understanding of the main male characters through the way in which they view and treat women. It is important to closely examine the male-female interaction and relationships in order to understand how Shakespeare uses the women as a dramatic device. The main male characters of Hamlet, Claudius, Polonius and Laertes are repeatedly shown to possess negative attitudes towards women. These attitudes result in unjust, oppressive and abusive relationships with the female characters of Gertrude and Ophelia. The primary male character, Hamlet, bears no exception to this general negativity directed at women. Shakespeare presents Hamlet as a man with a progressive hatred of womankind, having a detrimental influence upon his relationships with the female characters. Shakespeare implies the reason for Hamlet’s increased negativity to be his mother’s remarriage to his uncle, Claudius. The extent this has affected Hamlet is implied through repeated mention of it, such as in his second soliloquy when he speaks of Claudius’ two crimes as making his mother a â€Å"whore†¦ and the murder of [his] father†. Here, Shakespeare uses the order in which Hamlet lists Claudius’ crimes to convey which event Hamlet views most severely. Damage caused by the remarriage is again seen through Hamlet’s resulting negativity towards women. One such attitude is the belief that women are overtly sexual. Upon Hamlet’s ‘Chance’ meeting with Ophelia, he comments unfavourably on her tendency as a woman to â€Å"jig†, â€Å"amble† and â€Å"lisp†. Shakespeare’s chosen combination of verbs implies that Hamlet thinks women to have an inherently flirtatious nature. Hamlet also speaks to Ophelia of women’s â€Å"wantonness† becoming their â€Å"ignorance†, implying that sexual desires become their downfall. It seems that this view of women as sexual tempters leads Hamlet to believe that they should be ‘cut off’ from men, so as not to cause men detriment. Shakespeare conveys this through Hamlet’s instruction to Ophelia to â€Å"get thee to a nunnery†; repeating this line to demonstrate his conviction that women should remain separate so their overtly sexual nature cannot negatively influence men. Shakespeare emphasizes this through the forceful language Hamlet uses to instruct Ophelia in this action, for example â€Å"go, and quickly too† and that she must â€Å"go now†. Through Hamlet’s repetition of the imperative verb â€Å"go†, Shakespeare conveys his commanding tone, leaving the audience with no doubt of his vehemence. Shakespeare again shows Hamlet’s problem with women’s sexuality through his repulsion at his mother’s relationship with Claudius. In Hamlet’s first soliloquy he speaks of the speed of the marriage, saying how Gertrude did â€Å"post with such dexterity to incestuous sheets†. Here, Shakespeare’s repetition of ‘s’ sounds acts as a sibilant to emphasise that Hamlet is hissing the words, conveying disgust at his mother’s remarriage and sexual relationship. In negatively viewing the sexuality of both women in his life, Shakespeare hints that Hamlet not only has a problem with them individually, but that his grudge also lies with womankind. This is epitomized through his suggestion to Ophelia at the ‘Chance Meeting’ that there should be â€Å"no more marriage†, thus effectively terminating sexual relationships. Hamlet’s disapproval of women’s sexuality is linked with his belief that they have a ruinous influence upon men. Shakespeare shows this attitude through the way that in the ‘Chance Meeting’ with Ophelia, Hamlet suggests that women in general corrupt men, saying â€Å"wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them†. Shakespeare again shows Hamlet blaming women for men’s faults including his own ‘insanity’, saying their flirtatious games â€Å"hath made [him] mad†. Thus, Hamlet is shown to hold women as scapegoats, accountable for men’s faults. Hamlet’s negative attitudes of women combine to produce unequal and oppressive relationships with both women in his life. Shakespeare demonstrates the imbalance in Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia through the way the two characters treat one another so differently. Whilst Hamlet carries out a character assassination of her in the ‘Chance Meeting’ saying that she is â€Å"corrupt† and a â€Å"sinner†, Ophelia glorifies him. Ophelia implies that Hamlet is awed saying he is â€Å"observed† and the â€Å"glass of fashion†. Also, Ophelia believes him to be of good character, saying he has a â€Å"noble mind†. This suggests Ophelia’s adoration of Hamlet, prior to his ‘madness’, and hints at her love for him. Through this contrast between Ophelia’s treatment of Hamlet with his of her, Shakespeare indicates who dominates their imbalanced relationship. The result is confusion and pain for the subservient Ophelia, shown through her repeated questions such as â€Å"what means this my lord? † and her declaration of grief at Hamlet’s rejection, proclaiming â€Å"O woe is me†.

He Desire to Change the Subservient Role free essay sample

The Desire to Change the Subservient Role of Women in Old Chinese Society Chinese women stayed in an unequal status with men in old Chinese Society. Shen Congwen’s â€Å"Xiao Xiao† and Ding ling’s â€Å"When I Was in Xia Village† are two stories about village women’s lives during modern time in China. The stories in both of these works present an important traditional Chinese belief that it is profitable to raise geese than to raise daughter. In â€Å"Xiao Xiao†, she is a twelve-year-old girl who is married with a two-year-old husband, Chunguan, and as his caretaker in her youth. While â€Å"When I was in Xia Village† is a period when narrator spends his/her time in Xia village and make friends with a village girl Zhenzhen. She is sent to Japan to spy Japanese government after she is raped by Japanese soldiers. When she goes back village due to her disease, people look down upon her and laugh at her. Finally she runs away from Xiao Dabao’s propose and seeks for a fresh life in city. Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen have something in common that they are both independent-minded woman; also they are from village and ever desired to live in city to find new life and to have education; they live under the tradition of gender discrimination in old China. While their experiences are different, and, at the end, Zhenzhen is seeking for her new life in another place, yet we see Xiaoxiao and her husband’s family is still within traditions in their small village. In men’s world, women are like a tool which they can use to make their life good, but we see some of women have desire to change their subservient role to become independent in Chinese society. Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen are independent-minded women compared to other women at that time in Chinese society. They are not afraid of break down the present life and live in their owns. When Xiaoxiao’s grandpa and other relatives make joke on her about figuring out her should become a coed when she grows up. Then she has thinking that how coeds’ life is, â€Å"†¦she felt vague stirrings of unrest, and took to imagining herself as a ‘coed’. Would she behave like the ‘coed’ Grandfather talked about? In any case, there was nothing frightful about these ‘coeds’ and so these notions began to occupy this smile girl’s thoughts for the first time† (Shen 86). Although the author does not mention Xiaoxiao’s desire to become a coed directly in the story, I feel that Xiaoxiao wants to have a different life from her present life as a caretaker in village. She is young and hopes her life to be colorful and meaningful. After her stomach gets bigger, she wants to have a new life in city, â€Å"After a while, Xiaoxiao would finger her snakelike black braid, and, thinking of life in the city, she said: ‘Brother Motley, why don’t we go where we can be free in the city and find work there? What do you say? ’† (Shen 91). She knows if she keeps living with her husband’s family, she would go to dead. No more clearly than herself that she knows her situation is worse. If she elopes with Brother Motley, she could be same as those coeds in the school and live her own life with a normal marriage. Obviously, Xiaoxiao has her idea what her life she wants. In â€Å"When I was in Xia Village†, Zhenzhen is an independent-mind woman as well. Even though she has been raped and treated unrespectable. Zhenzhen does not care about surrounding people’s misunderstandings. For others’ sneer, she thinks she need to find another life but not surrender to marry Xiao Dabao, so she said to narrator â€Å"I feel that living among strangers and keeping busy would be better than living at home where people know me†¦ It’s better for each of us to go our own separate ways than it is to have everyone stay together in one place. I’m doing this for myself, but I’m doing it for the others â€Å" (Ding 146). Just like Xiaoxiao, Zhenzhen wants a new life in city and to start over. She hopes in a new place where not many people know her, so she could start over, â€Å"A person’s life is not just for one’s father and mother, or even for oneself. Some have called me young, inexperienced, and bad-tempered. I don’t dispute it. There are some things that I just have to keep to myself† (Ding 146). From these two stories, Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen are two women who have their own thought instead of under control of traditions. Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen have the same desire which moving from village to city. On one hand, Xiaoxiao wants to escape from her offence, on the other hand, she has desire to have sex with a real man, she cannot wait her little husband to grow up when she is twenty years old. So she cheats on her little husband â€Å"involuntarily† on surface. In addition, her husband’s families take her in but she never drops the idea to be like a coed, â€Å"One day, word spread that the coeds were back again. When Xiaoxiaoheard this, she eyes stared out unseeing, as if in a daze, her gaze fixed on the eastern horizon for some time† (Shen 93). She bent on joining the coeds on their way to the big city in search of freedom, unfortunately she is discovered. I guess Xiaoxiao does not have any ideas about having education in the city; she just has to get away from village. However, from her grandpa’s description on coed, she is interested in coed’s life and she thinks if she becomes a member of coed, she has holidays and does not need to do farm works. Zhenzhen is different. Although she is from village too, she has live in Japan many years. So she knows she goes to city because she wants a bright future and escape the sad village then to be educated in order to get a job with other communists, â€Å"What I do feel is that after I go to [Yan’an], I’ll be in a new situation. I will be in a new situation. I will be able to start life fresh† (Ding 146). Their movements illustrate that new Chinese women are changing people’s views and have sense of education is more and more important. Life in city is realistic and bright for them. Gender roles is very similar between â€Å"Xiaoxiao† and â€Å"When I Was in Xia Village†, they both present that women stand subservient role in society. Starting from Xiaoxiao’s marriage, her marriage is arranged by her uncle when she is only twelve. People at that time set this tradition because they think girl is useless because daughters will be others’ sooner or later, so it is better to send her earlier to save family’s food. To the bride’s family, accept a girl into their family is not only a way to take care of children, but also add a worker to help farming as a free labor. That’s why to be contrast with other female students in town, Xiaoxiao is adulterer. To punish Xiaoxiao’s cheating on her husband and families, Xiaoxiao is arranged to wait for her second marriage but no one come. Nevertheless, Xiaoxiao is lucky that her child turns out is a boy; she does not have to be married off after all. This tradition does not change after Xiaoxiao, then her son who is ten-year-old and have his wedding ceremony. Women in tradition could not hold any position of power. In the other story, people in Xia village are uneducated, so when Zhenzhen came back from Japan, they laughed at her and think she is dirty. Women have physical disadvantage than man, therefore, chastity becomes extremely crucial especially at that time. People in the village can not understand her grievance, this is one of the reason why Zhenzhen wants to go to [Xi’an] where most people are educated, at least not so care about her background. No matter from which aspect, Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen seems like a tool in men ruled the world. Xiaoxiao is portrayed as â€Å"object† sold from a place to another. She could not have her own happiness because she belongs to her husband’s family. Zhenzhen looks like more freedom than Xiaoxiao physically, but in fact, she is slaved by internal. Something she cannot shake off is her hatred and interiority, â€Å"†¦in a very calm voice, she said, ‘I can’t say that I hate him. I just feel now that I’m someone who’s diseased. It’s a fact that I was abused by a large number of Jap devils. I don’t remember that exact number. In any case, I’m unclean, and with such a black mark I don’t expect any good fortune to come my way†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Ding 146). Zhenzhen is used to her reputation and body to help Chinese government but at the end, she could not get any sympathy. These things always happened to women, but not men. In conclusion, Xiaoxiao and Zhenzhen are two uneducated women living in old Chinese society where unbalanced gender roles and old traditions exist. They both from village and dream to move to city meanwhile they have â€Å"sins† could not be excused. Through their different experience, they have similarities that they both independent-minded to change their lives to take education in big city. The ending of stories are different that Zhenzhen’s regardless of objection enable her goes to city as she wants, but Xiaoxiao still stays in village and keeps her original life. In old Chinese society, woman is absolutely not profitable than men. So people use women like a functional object to help working or take care of family. I think women are living a hard life and very powerless in society. Even thought they want to take education to change their lives, reality makes them difficult. However, women play many different roles which cannot be ignored. The authors express their thought and show the current situation through these good works.

Selling Organs Should Not Be Legalized Essay Essay Example

Selling Organs Should Not Be Legalized Essay Paper Organ contribution affects 100s of 1000s of people and their households worldwide. At the terminal of October 2008. more than 100. 000 people were waiting for an organ in the United States entirely. Unfortunately. the figure of givers is nowhere near that figure. The development of organ organ transplant as a standard medical process denotes that there is a significant demand for variety meats than is equal to carry through the current demands ( Barber 234 ) . If the variety meats were readily available as needed. 1000s of lives could be saved each twelvemonth. However. an organ market would redefine the act of donating variety meats and would in bend diminution organ parts ( Childress 71 ) . True. many would reason that the legalisation of organ markets is both morally ethical and good for the state. For illustration. some citizens feel it is the American manner to let people be free to auction their single variety meats and do whatever they desire with their organic structures. Add itionally. many obviously declare that sale would increase the supply and non decrease the per centum of selfless contribution ( Rothman 70 ) . To sum up. protagonists of organ selling believe that fiscal benefits might promote people to donate and should be a normal portion of a free endeavor system. Indeed. many might believe legalisation of the merchandising of variety meats is good. However. organ markets should go on to remain illegal in the United States because selling is unfair. promotes unhealthy greed. and devalues human life. Initially. selling should non be legalized because it is unfair. For case. there is a strong economic motivation for low-income households to sell their variety meats yet none for affluent people to make so. Likewise. the hazard of coercion and development. specially of hapless people. is considerable. Some insist the rich have been habitually prepared to let underprivileged persons to make similar life endangering things ( McClellan 106 ) . Another unacceptable com ponent of unfairness is the fact that affluent people can ever afford to acquire a clasp of these invaluable variety meats but the hapless can non. At one point in clip a kidney was put up for sale on the on-line auction site ‘eBay’ . The monetary value for the organ had gone up to 7 million U. S dollars by the clip eBay was notified of the state of affairs. It is sensible to believe that if sale was legalized the hapless would be capable to being to forced to sell to derive this money and merely the wealthy would be capable of affording the pricy variety meats. â€Å"We have neer accepted the notation that the poor persons should go the beginning of trim parts for the rich persons. † . says Goodman. Based on this research. under the weight of poorness. persons might hold to fall back to â€Å"cashing in† one of their expendable variety meats. In summarisation. the hapless have less of a opportunity to secure the dearly-won variety meats than the rich and the wealthy have a strong motive to coerce the hapless to sell because of their economic state of affairss. Furthermore. research shows legalisation could advance unhealthy greed on the population. To exemplify. â€Å"No longer would donors supply the ‘gift of life’ — they alternatively would donate the equivalent of the market value of the organs† ( Childress 71 ) . In add-on. all excessively frequently where money is involved. greed overwhelms all other considerations. All excessively frequently. those who stand to derive the most will plave more value on the terminal ( money or needed organ ) than the agencies ( the mutilation or decease of another human being ) . For illustration. in the instance of Chinese captives. it was reported that prisioners with premier variety meats and ready clients would acquire bumped to the forepart of the executing line. And a leery figure of prisioners were executed each twelvemonth. more than four 1000 in 1997. many of them for minor offenses. If the Torahs were changed. the greed of some really bad people would go even stronger. The impression that people might see an organ. or the money derived from sale. as a higher value than the chance of mangling or butchering another human being is absolutely upseting. The bets are high. What is being sold is in high demand. What is being bought makes a difference between life and decease. These facts entirely cause person to make whatever they can to obtain an organ. Obviously. the footing of this position is found in the old expression. ‘Money is the root of all evil’ . As a consequence. we clearly see that hard currency payments affect moral duties and all excessively frequently when money is involved. ?greed overwhelms all other considerations. Ultimately. organ selling should non be legalized because it devalues human life. In peculiar. leting the trade of variety meats would ensue in the commodification of organic structures and their parts. Similarly. trade goods would carry on us to be under the feeling that expired organic structures are simply merchandises and would finally take the manner to the devastation of societal values. Think about the enticement. If you had a comparative whose decease was inevitable. would you be enticed to halt his or her intervention early if you knew you would acquire money for the variety meats harvested? If you wouldnt travel that far. would you take a breath a suspiration of alleviation when the patient eventually died and you would pay some measures or take a dreamed-of trip? That sort of tempation can’t aid but do people bury. at least a small. that the deceasing patient is a human being. â€Å"It is a cardinal maltreatment of people so despairing that they would hold to sell a kidney or half of their sight† ( McClellan 106 ) . Commodification has the complete ability to decrease every bit good as destruct the pattern of selflessness. Therefore. purchasing and merchandising variety meats devalues human existences and turns them into merchandises. In decision. organ markets should non be legalized because it is unjust. devalues human life. and promotes unhealthy greed. Our society has enormously powerful accounts as to for what grounds the trafficking of variety meats for money should non be allowed. â€Å"We have been rather decently nauseating about the free market attack to the human organic structure. There are some things that aren’t and shouldn’t be for sale — among them an ‘extra cornea’ or ‘spare kidney’† ( O’Neill 46 ) .
